Hey, has anyone noticed that weird tunnel entrance on Melrose and Formosa? There seems to be a matching entrance/exit on the other side of the street. It's some stairs that descend under the street, as if it's a subway entrance, but it's all fenced off. The stairs have a bunch of junk on them, so I don't think it's been used for awhile--quite defunct.
Does anyone know what these are? Were they just made to cross melrose underground instead of using a crosswalk? Or was it some kind of aborted subway entrance or something? I've never seen one of these anywhere else--so it seems to me to be some kind of relic of pedestrian culture.

Tue, July 31, 2007 - 3:02 PMOld underground crosswalks. You can find them all over the city in areas where people used to walk alot. We have one in Long Beach going under Ocean Blvd at Cherry Ave that connects people from the park to the beach. It's usually closed off, except on the 4th of July when pedestrians reach critical mass. -

Tue, July 31, 2007 - 10:15 PMDiana is right, Mr R. Before stop lights many streets in LA had underground crosswalks. They began sealing them as LA became increasingly dangerous. Many were still used up until the late 80's, but gangs, muggings and rape pretty much shut them down.

Re: Weird underground tunnel (Melrose and Formosa)
Fri, October 12, 2007 - 3:15 PMOh!
That *is* an underground crosswalk. I went to Melrose Avenue Elementary school (which is adjacent to that intersection) in the mid-1970s, and we used to cross underneath there. But it was only open at certain times. It used to have a chain link fence just at the bottom of the steps to lock the underground tunnel part, I'm not sure when they built up that big monstrosity to cover the stairwell, too. It was scary as a little kid, and it smelled like pee! Every time we'd enter on one end, we would run and not stop or look back until we got across. No one ever wanted to wait down there very long. But it was one way we could cross Melrose without adult supervision. I seem to remember it only being open during school hours for the children to use, but closed the rest of the time because homeless people went down there. Back then we called them "bums". I think it was originally built back in the 50s, but by the 70s was being used less and less. Another throwback to the 50s when I went to school there were the weekly air raid emergency sirens that would blow at 10:15 a.m. every Friday (which were also located near that intersection). I think they stopped doing that later in the 70s.
So, yeah. It was a safety crosswalk for children to use to walk to school, and probably went defunct in the late 70s or early 80s. At some point after that they added the big fence completely enclosing the stairwell, and it's been sitting unused like that ever since. -

I went to grade school in the Valley back in the 60s and vividly remember the air raid drills. My grade school was next to a fire station that had an air raid siren "towering somewhat menacingly" over the station. At my school, they did them the last Friday of every month at 10:00 am. I wondered when they stopped doing them. I'm glad they stopped doing them, I used to hate them! LOL
Last Thanksgiving, I got to show my girlfriend my old neighborhood and that fire station. It and the siren are still there, but they've built a new station across the street and down a few buildings. -

I think I misremembered about the time, Todd. I think you're right -- once a month, Friday, 10 a.m. It was always when we were on the playground having recess. It's a weird, yet neat memory! =) -

We were always inside. That's weird your school had recess during that time. When we heard the siren go off right at 10 am, it meant we dived under our desks and waited it out for five minutes. I'm old enough to remember that during the Bay of Pigs fiasco they canceled it because the local authorities were afraid if they did the drill, people would think we'd been bombed and there would have been widespread panic everywhere.
I live near San Francisco now and they have a siren go off every Tuesday at 12 noon, something they've done here since the 1940s. It goes off and you hear a message piped throughout the city saying, "This is just a drill." The joke here is that during the Cold War, the Russians shoulda bombed SF on Tuesdays at 12 noon, because everyone would have thought it was just a drill. :)

Re: Weird underground tunnel (Melrose and Formosa)
Thu, September 18, 2008 - 12:38 AMThey're finally sealing this one up now. I've noticed that whenever I drive past this intersection (I take Melrose from the exit off 101 to my place in W. Hollywood), it usually smells god-awful. Not sure if it's because of the work they're doing now or that the dumpsers at the school are particularly bad. I've since learned to roll up and my windows and turn the re-circulate air button on. -

Re: Weird underground tunnel (Melrose and Formosa)
Wed, January 14, 2009 - 8:34 PMI remember seeing those all the time when I lived near Western, back in the 70's. Never used one, though.
I remember one time, our cousin from Chicago came out to visit. We were driving down Western Ave when
we passed by one of the underground crosswalks. Our cousin looked at it, and, in total innocence, said:
"Is that where you catch the 'L'? "
We had a lot of explaining to do.....
