Tell me someone....What was Zucky's? What are your memories of the place?
I see the long-standing empty building has been repainted (even the sign!) and has a sign on it announcing a newly opening bank. I have always like the building and thought the location would make for a great club location. But a Bank?!? Hmmmm. I guess anything is better than an empty building. At least they didn't tear it down.

Zucky's was a mediocre deli that was one of the very few- if not the only- places open after ten in that part of town, but as Santa Monica's version of Canter's for post-clubbing snacks, it was sadly lacking. But ya take whatcha can get sometimes.

I lived in Santa Monica from about 1975 to 2000, Zucky's yes mediocre but all the same to an " old timer " like me missed cause really at that time thats all we had at or near the " old mall ".

I was walking by there in 99 or 00 and actually took one of the tile Z off the wall and have kept it with me.

My Father lived in Santa Monica in the late-'40s through late-'50s, and he used to take my Mother to Zucky's on dates near the end of that period. Consequently, when my family would visit Southern California in the late-'60s through '70s, we'd always stop by Zucky's. I remember it being better than "mediocre", but given that this was 30-40 years ago, my memory may be sweetening it. My parents have told me that it went downhill in the late-'70s, but when I was a boy, I believe it was still quite good.

Here are the things I still remember clearly: the interior was pretty Googie, with a mauve and gold color scheme and "Sputnik" ceiling fixtures. There was a glass pie carousel near the cashier, from which you could select a slice of pie from maybe a dozen that were spinning there. There was also a large glass jar with huge dill pickles; I would always get one to go, and gnaw on it on the long drive back up to the San Joaquin Valley. Near the back of the dining room, there was a strange little raised platform just big enough for a couple more tables. And they had excellent rye bread. I suppose it was a pretty generic Jewish deli-diner, but I do have lots of fond memories of it.

I never got to visit Zucky's and I can't say I'm sad about it. It's always been closed since I moved to Santa Monica. I'm just glad that the Zucky's sign was kept. I don't know who to thanks for that, but whoever is responsible deserves a pat on the back.
