Virgin Megastore West Hollywood RIP

It was only a matter of time after they opened one up on Hollywood Blvd. Does anyone know if they plan on putting something else in that space already?

They've got a %40 off clearance sale--I found some good deals, but Virgin's prices are so ridiculously marked up most of them aren't much better than what you can get off of Amazon.

That's two enormous vacant spaces in that complex. The theater manager said maybe a Trader Joe's would be going into Sam Ash, but that would make the parking hellacious... it'll be interesting to see what else comes in. The Virgin store was the big destination the place was built around.

I have no love for that store- too mainstream product- but I'll sure miss the book department. And too bad on principle that the only remaining big record store in the area is gone, aside from Amoeba. Times they are a-changin'.

I used to like watching the Hall of Fame inductions from the window in my office...too bad Virgin's not going to be in on the action anymore.

Talk about defunct L.A..,that place (faux Kodak-center?)should have never been built(look across the street, the Greenblatt's,Comedy club, etc. building/architecture),they tore down the fabulous Schwabb's.Don't you love to hate this town sometimes?Glad that the Amoeba is the only game in town.
Maybe in 50 more years they'll rebuild the Schwabb's and put a tower on it.

I don't remember anything too spectacular about the architecture of Schwab's, other than the iconic neon sign on the front- it was a pretty boxy building by itself, although certainly more interesting for many reasons than what replaced it. But in the same complex was the original Googie's- namesake of Googie style, which was all psychotic zigzags and angles and pretty fabulous.

Schwabs may have been boxy, but it was historic, even if Lana Turner wasn't really discovered there.

Does anyone remember Lady Snow's, the headshop, that was around the corner, down the hill on Crescent Heights a bit?

No,but i do remember Numbers across the street.Always a hoot, before or after a (the best and STILL available )piece of applepie w/whipped cream)@ Greenblatt's.
My memory off that building was deco/30'ish.

There are a lot of pictures of the original Schwab's, the one from Sunset Boulevard, but I had to look hard to find this one, and this website was the only place that had a picture that I could find.

              www.hollywoodphotographs.com/search.asp

It was a sort of pinkish-clay colored cottage cheese stucco, that I vaguely remember as having gold glitter flecks in it. There were a couple panels of mosaic stripes at street level. But the sign was the thing that really stood out about the place. The "Steak N Stein" sign was where Googie used to be. I think it ended its days as a beauty supply store.
